Seven Ways to Save Money on Your Credit Card Processing
Regardless of who processes your credit and debit card transactions, chances are you are overpaying. By following a few simple guideless you can cut your credit card machine processing costs by as much as 25% or more!
1. Make sure you swipe as many of your transactions as possible on your credit card machine as opposed to keyed-entry. The "interchange" which is the price member banks pay for processing your charges is higher for keyed entry, and you will therefore be charged a higher rate. This is commonly referred to as a mid-qualified or partially qualified surcharge.
2. Try accept debit cards more. If you process debit transactions of $25 or more make sure you use the "debit" option on your terminal instead of "credit" and have the customer enter their pin number. By doing this there will be no discount fees accessed and you will only pay one flat fee for the charge. The larger the ticket the more you will save.
3. If you do more than a few keyed-in transactions on your credit card machine each month, consider getting a separate account setup for keyed-entry only. Usually the keyed rate will be much less than the "mid" or "partially qualified" charges. For instance an average surcharged keyed rate might be around 1.5% - 3.2% but a merchant services account setup for keyed entry might see rates as low as 2.25% or lower. Most modern credit card machine terminals can accommodate at least two separate accounts.
4. Avoid Retrieval Requests - Make sure the name that is on your receipt and that you advertise under is the same as the name on your account. Otherwise your customer may call their bank and question the charge and you will be charged a fee.
5. Commercial/Corporate Cards - These cards are normally downgraded to a non-qualified surcharge which is the most expensive form of surcharge. However if your merchant services account is set up for "level two processing" you can avoid the surcharge if you key-in a sales tax number and a customer number.
6. Batch your credit card machine transactions daily or, have your account setup to "auto batch" If you have transactions that are not batched within a short period of time (usually 48 hours) they will downgrade to mid-qualified and you will have to pay surcharges.
7. Always use your address verification feature (AVS) on keyed or internet charges. The AVS is there not only for fraud protection but it also prevents downgrading of keyed-in or internet transactions to mid or non-qualified.
One last piece of advice, if you are shopping for merchant services, either as a new merchant or as an existing merchant looking for a better service provider, read the terms of the agreement! Many companies are now offering too-good-to-be-true discount rates that will either escalate soon after you enrol or, are only good on certain card types such as debit. (Interac charges a flat fee per transaction(6-10 cents per transaction) & Visa Debit charges a discount rates(around 1%) are typically much lower than credit card rates. Remember if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Wireless Credit Card Terminals – Buyer’s Guide
Mobile Credit card terminals introduction
Portable Credit card terminals are a common sight in almost every On-site workers (i.e. plumbers and electricians, HVACs, movers, pizza deliveries etc). They let mobile businesses process credit cards efficiently and securely.
While they are a relatively small purchase in terms of dollars, the total impact they can have on your businesses is enormous. Merchant account providers typically charge half a percent more for keyed-in transactions than for swiped charges, so if your old terminal is not reading cards as well as it used to, it could be costing you money. Older terminals may also not be able to support debit card transactions. Or, you may simply need more terminals because your business is growing.
Wireless terminals
Wireless credit card terminals provide a significant advantage for some businesses. For example, taxi drivers, seasonal businesses, plumbers and electricians, HAVC, movers, pizza deliveries, merchants with temporary locations, and large lot businesses can all greatly increase efficiency by accepting credit cards wirelessly. However for most businesses, wireless terminals are a needless expense. Wireless terminals by necessity have printers built-in - your employees will not want to carry around two separate pieces of equipment. Important factors to consider when evaluating wireless terminals include battery life, range, weight, and shock-resistance - any terminal that gets carried around is going to be dropped occasionally.
Pricing and how to buy
Wireless Credit card terminals are not particularly expensive - Terminals are often priced as loss leaders to entice you to choose a particular merchant account provider, so you may see prices online that are "too good to be true" - and usually, they are.
Wireless terminals can be $1300 to $1700.
In most cases, you should buy the terminals outright. A 48-month lease could cost you over $2000 for a terminal that you could have purchased for $1300.
Because credit card terminals are relatively inexpensive considering the important role they play for many businesses, it is worth spending a little extra to make sure you get all the reliability you need. Saving $50 is not going to affect your business much in the long run; a terminal that is slow or balky can have a serious negative effect.
Where to buy
Purchasing credit card terminals from your merchant account provider can simplify the process - they will pre-program the terminals for you. They also know that you will be working with them for years to come, so they are more likely to give you a break on terminal pricing and will not be as interested in selling you models at the highest pricing.
If you are purchasing your terminals separately, the choice of vendor is not terribly important. The transaction is a one-time purchase, not the start of an ongoing relationship. Combined with the overall reliability of terminals and the low total cost, this means that the decision of which vendor you purchase a terminal from is pretty minor.
If you choose to buy your credit card terminals over the Internet, use the same caution you would with any online purchase: if you are not familiar with the company, do some basic research to make sure they are reputable. Also make sure you understand both the return policies (in particular, what restocking fees you may be liable for if you choose to return a terminal) and the warranties and service agreements that come with your purchase.
Buying & maintenance tips
- Terminal memory can store transactions for later verification if you are unable to connect to your merchant account provider. 256k memory holds about 1000 transactions - far more than you should process without connecting - which should be enough for most businesses.
- Keep your terminals clean - dust, crumbs and especially paper lint can quickly clog printers and gum up stripe readers. A $2 can of compressed air can quickly clean your terminal out and help it last up to five years.
- Choosing a local supplier for your terminals means you can get some basic training for your staff. A quick introduction to using the advanced features of your terminal can help you get your money's worth.
- Some terminals use flash memory to store the software that runs them, which allows system updates to be easily downloaded and installed. This cans a longer operating life for your terminal.
- Make sure that, the free warranty come with your purchase.

What Are the Benefits of Portable Credit Card Terminals?
Portability
The most apparent benefit of wireless credit card terminals is that they are, in fact, portable. By breaking the reliance on physical telephone lines, merchants can eliminate the need for an expensive dedicated line while also allowing business to be conducted in locales--such as flea markets-where telephone lines may be unavailable. Merchants who work out of a virtual or home office and meet clients in the field can also easily and quickly process credit card payments without the need to seek out and plug into a telephone jack.
Portable credit card machine is “portable”-Portable credit card swipe machine is very convenient to use. It can be bringing to everywhere you like. You don’t need a big bulky bag to fit them. They can even fit inside a woman’s handbag. The portable size of the machine has creates a lot of convenience when you want to bring them for business trip. For the sack of protecting the machine, some people will put it inside a messenger bag.
Reduced Fees
Without mobile credit card terminal, merchants doing their sales & services in non store environment are relegated to taking credit card information on manual slips and manually entering the transactions into the terminal at a later time. To reduce the likelihood of a transaction being declined when it is entered in the terminal, merchants who process off-site must call an e authorization center to ensure the card is valid, and each call of this nature incurs a small fee. In addition, many merchant account providers charge a higher fee for manually-entered transactions, further increasing the cost of doing business. A portable card terminal eliminates the need for both of these fees by allowing the merchant to quickly and easily obtain a card-present automated approval in the field.
Ensured Privacy
When merchants in the field manually take credit card information to be processed later, all of the information necessary to process the card must be written for later use. Because this paper has the potential to be lost, stolen or misused, many card holders express concern or hesitation about having their information recorded in a human-readable format. Portable credit card terminals help calm consumer fears and increase privacy by electronically processing the transaction while the cardholder is present, eliminating the need for human-readable copies of sensitive information.
Accepting credit cards on the go can increase your business revenue & customer satisfaction.
